March: In like a lion!
March is a busy and exciting month. It's Disabilities Awareness Month and the Arc will again host the Recreational Activities Fair to highlight recreational and social opportunities in our area for people with disabilities. We will also be hosting a Building Pathways to Empowerment Forums with The Arc of Indiana.

March 2 is the national day to Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign, an ongoing effort by Special Olympics, Best Buddies International and other supporters to raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word "retard(ed)" and encourage people to pledge to stop using the R-word. The campaign, created by youth, is intended to engage schools organizations and communities to rally and pledge their support. Special Olympics College @ Purdue is recognizing this day with an informational table set up in the Stewart Center Lobby on Purdue's campus. Stop by Ithey'll be there all day) sand add your support!

In honor of Disabilities Awareness Month we offer several ways for you to recognize those businesses, teachers, professional staff and volunteers who have been important in your life. Nominate them for one of our Appreciation Awards! The winners will be recognized at our Annual Meeting in April. Applications are now available online and are due April 12.

Building Pathways to Empowerment Forum
Indiana is facing a budget crisis unlike anything we have seen in many years. Every program that people with disabilities count on is facing huge challenges, at a time when more people than ever before need help. At this critical time, it is important that we not simply react, but that we act.

That is why The Arc of Indiana launched the Building Pathways to Empowerment Campaign in the spring of 2010. The goal is to redesign and redefine the system of services for people with developmental disabilities to be a system that provides what people want and need in the most sensible way possible.

A critical part of the Pathways campaign is harnessing the collective wisdom of families, self-advocates and providers. WE NEED YOU to attend the Building Pathways to Empowerment Forum in Lafayette on Tuesday, March 22, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Amelia Earhart Elementary School.

Go, Know, Grow & Flourish Scholarships
We still have funds available to pay the conference fees for trainings you might want to attend. These conferences do not have to be sponsored by The Arc and do not have to be held in Tippecanoe County.

Individuals with developmental disabilities and family members of people with disabilities who reside in Tippecanoe County may apply. Family members include parents and siblings, foster parents, legal guardians, and educational surrogate parents.

This fund reimburses the registration or participation fees associated with conferences, trainings, or workshops that help individuals and families better understand their disability and/or resources available.

For more information and to apply visit Go, Grow, Know & Flourish Scholarships.

Adult Siblings needed for Research Study
Along with other organizations, The Arc was contacted by a PhD student at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada. Her dissertation research is focused on sibling relationships in adults who have a brother or sister with a developmental or intellectual disability. She is looking for adults, aged 25 to 69, who have a brother or sister with a disability and who might be interested in participating. You can complete the study online. If you'd like more information you can contact Julie Burbidge directly.
