Executive Director Update
August was a busy month for The Arc. Adult Recreation hosted a Bowling party at Arrowhead on August 19th. We had 49 bowlers and several people attended to watch the event. Special thanks to Deb Wilson for all her hard work on this event.

Best Buddies hosted a call out on August 23rd at Columbian Park. Thirty five people showed up in the rain to fill out Best Buddy applications. If you would still like to sign up (ages 18-50, able to attend monthly meetings) please contact 765-476-3277 or email bestbuddies@arcoftippecanoe.org.

We hosted our 4th Bark For The Arc (with Hike with your Hound) on August 24th at Columbian Park. We had over 150 dogs and their owners attend the event and raised over $1300.00 for The Arc! I would like to thank all of our volunteers, including, Beth, Cari, Dave, Deb, Jill, Katie, Katy, Katy, Kelsey, Melissa, Ron, Shane, Shawn and Tif. It was a lot of fun.

Special note for the Sep 3 Football Game Attendees: We are meeting at Gate N at 11:00am. If you need assistance you can contact Milissa at 476-3277. This is The Arc cell phone and I will have the phone with me at the game.

Thanks for all you do to support The Arc. It is wonderful to work with each one of you.

Happy Labor Day!
Milissa

Kids Night Out
Let us enjoy your kids while you enjoy an evening out!

Our next Kids Night Out is on Friday, September 16, 2011 from 6pm - 9pm at T.C. Harris School. We'll have dinner and play games and possibly watch a movie. We'll also have several volunteers from Wabash National. They came last September and had so much fun they selected this program to again participate in during United Way's Week of Caring!

To RSVP please visit our Kids Night Out website or call 765-476-3277.

Hunger Hike
The Arc will again be walking in the Hunger Hike on Sunday, September 18. The walk starts at 2pm and we'll meet at the Chase Bank plaza at the corner of 2nd and Main Street across from Riehle Plaza at 1:30pm. We ask that you bring $5 - $10 to participate in the 2-mile walk. We hope to raise $200! All of it will go to help fight hunger in our community. If you would like to donate online visit The Arc Team's Fundraising page.

This is a good follow-up to our amazing Homeward Bound team in April! We had the biggest team and raised $500! We hope you can join us!

If you plan to attend let us know by calling 765-476-3277 or emailing Milissa. But feel free to meet us there when it turns out to be a beautiful afternoon for a walk!

New Social Group for 2nd - 5th graders!
The Arc is starting a new group for kids with in grades 2 through 5 who could benefit from more practice with social skills. It's open to kids of all abilities, including those on the Autism spectrum, Asperger's Syndrome, Down's Syndrome, PDD, etc. Modeled like the SuperStar Social Club for teens, the group will meet monthly for a structured social activity that provides an opportunity to increase social skills and with peers, gain independence from caregivers, and make friends. Assistance and some positive role models is being provided by the Purdue student group Special Olympics College at Purdue. We've worked with them before and they are some amazing young people. Children with all abilities are welcome!

We hope you and your child can join us for the Callout on Friday, September 30 6pm - 8pm at Faith Community Center (Multi-Purpose Room) in Lafayette. A pizza dinner is provided. If you plan to attend please let us know by calling 765-476-3277 or emailing Milissa. We want to be sure we have pizza for you!

Building a Better Future: Planning for your child's best life!
Regardless of your age, or the age of your child, it is important to plan for the best quality of life for both you and your child. Future planning ensures your child's needs are met throughout his or her life. You want to be able to make this plan before there is a crisis. Some decisions affect your child while you are still living (like guardianship) and others afect your child after you are gone (like trusts).

We are bringing together many of the people and organizations involved in planning for the future of a loved one with special needs. This is your chance to find out what services are available to you and to talk with professionals. We hope you can join us on Monday, October 11 in the evening. We'll let you know as soon as we have the time and location set.
